You've seen the shots: a labrador mid-dive, cheeks ballooned, eyes locked on a tennis ball, bubbles everywhere. Underwater dog photography looks like magic. In reality, it's equal parts specialist gear, patience, training and understanding your dog.
The gear
- Underwater housing or dome port. The camera goes inside a waterproof housing; a dome port allows photographers to create "split" images — half above the surface, half below. This is one of the signature looks of underwater photography.
- Fast, wide lenses. Water absorbs light quickly. Photographers often rely on wide apertures, higher ISO and very fast shutter speeds (1/1000s+) to freeze movement.
- Pool vs. open water. Most underwater dog photography takes place in pools, where visibility, lighting and safety can be carefully controlled. Lakes and rivers create beautiful, moodier images, but visibility is much harder to manage.
The safety rules (non-negotiable)
- The dog decides. No dog should ever be thrown, pushed or forced into water. A successful image always starts with a dog that feels comfortable.
- Know your dog's limits. Some breeds are natural swimmers, while others are not built for the water. Short-muzzled breeds, for example, can have more difficulty swimming and should always be closely supervised.
- Keep sessions short and positive. Warm-up time, breaks and constant supervision are essential.
- Watch the temperature. Cold water can quickly become uncomfortable, especially in Alberta. Always pay attention to signs of stress or shivering.

The most impressive underwater dog portraits are not just about the camera equipment. They come from patience, trust and understanding the dog's personality.
