Living in Calgary means the Rockies are just a short drive away — and there are countless trails where you can enjoy the outdoors with your dog. These are seven of our favourite dog-friendly hikes, ordered from easy strolls to more epic adventures.
One important note: in Kananaskis and provincial parks, dogs must be kept on leash. It's the law, and it's also bear country.
The seven
- Fish Creek Provincial Park (in-city, easy). 80+ km of trails along the creek without leaving Calgary. Aspen groves, river bends and wildlife sightings make this a perfect year-round adventure.
- Nose Hill loop (in-city, easy). Big prairie skies and downtown views create that satisfying "we actually went hiking" feeling in about ninety minutes.
- Bowmont Park bluffs (in-city, easy-moderate). Ridge views over the Bow River and a quieter atmosphere than some of Calgary's better-known parks.
- Troll Falls (Kananaskis, easy). A wide, gentle trail leading to a beautiful waterfall that becomes especially magical in winter. A great first mountain outing for dogs ready for longer adventures.
- Fullerton Loop (Kananaskis, moderate). A local favourite with forest sections, ridgeline views and just enough elevation to earn the post-hike nap.
- Prairie View Trail (Kananaskis, moderate-hard). The reward is the iconic Barrier Lake lookout — turquoise water, mountain views and a truly unforgettable backdrop.
- Grassi Lakes (Canmore, moderate). Emerald pools and canyon walls make this one of the Rockies' most popular trails. Take the easier trail option with dogs and consider going on a weekday to avoid crowds.
Mountain rules for dog owners
- Leash on, always, in K-Country and provincial parks. Wildlife encounters can escalate quickly with a loose dog.
- Carry bear spray and know how to use it. Keep dogs close, especially around berry patches in late summer.
- Bring water and check paws regularly. Scree can be hard on paw pads, and mountain afternoons can get hot.
- Pack out everything. Yes, including that.
