Calgary summers are short, glorious and best spent outdoors — ideally with your dog by your side. But "dog-friendly" in Alberta is more complicated than a sticker on the door, so here's how it actually works and where to go.
How dog-friendly patios actually work in Alberta
Health regulations generally keep dogs out of areas where food is prepared or served — but patios can welcome dogs where the venue allows it and the setup complies (typically outdoor areas with direct access that don't route dogs through the dining room).
Translation: it's venue by venue, and policies can change. A quick call before you go can save disappointment.
Where to look
- Breweries. Calgary's brewery scene is famously dog-friendly. Many taprooms welcome dogs on patios, and some have built a strong community around being welcoming to four-legged visitors. Always check each venue's current policy.
- Inglewood & Ramsay. The highest density of dog-welcoming patios in the city, plus the Bow River pathway for a walk before or after.
- Kensington. Compact, walkable and home to several patios that welcome dogs throughout the summer.
- Mission / 4th Street. Busy but manageable with a calm, social dog. Weekday evenings are often a more relaxed option.
- 17th Ave. Patio central. Weekend afternoons can be overwhelming for some dogs, while weekday evenings are usually much calmer.

- Exercise first. A walk beforehand helps your dog settle and enjoy the experience.
